Need some knit or crochet motivation? Tamara Kelly will set your stitches straight again with her excellent tutorials and eye-catching patterns. We chatted with Tamara about the evolution of her blog Moogly (http://www.mooglyblog.com) and where she gets her inspiration.
CW: Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started knitting and crocheting?
Tamara: I’ve always loved crafts. When I was a kid growing up on a small farm (where Country Woman magazine was a staple), I made enough of those loop potholders to protect the entire Midwest! After my oldest was born, my sister-in-law taught me the basics of crochet while both our kids napped. I fell in love immediately.
CW: How did you translate your love of knitting and crocheting to the blogging world?
Tamara: I first started blogging eight years ago with a mommy blog. And while I love my kids more than I love yarn, the words just didn’t flow. But I did write one little dishcloth pattern that I really enjoyed! The mommy blogging stopped, but that dishcloth pattern still got visitors. Eventually, I realized design was where my heart was, and here I am, sharing knowledge, patterns and fun with the craft community.
CW: What is the biggest surprise blogging has brought you?
Tamara: I’m surprised by my blog’s popularity, which is also the biggest challenge! I’m shy by nature, so I’ve had to learn to put myself out there. Luckily, I’m a yarn-crafting geek, so it’s easy for me to talk about crocheting and knitting, especially to an audience that shares my enthusiasm! And the rewards have been innumerable—from making amazing friends to that sense of accomplishment and joy that comes when you’re successful doing what you love.
CW: What kind of relationship do you have with your followers?
Tamara: I love my readers and helping other crocheters and knitters with their crafts. I read each comment and answer every question as best I can. I love to take requests, and my readers are full of great suggestions. I might be alone on my couch, but chatting with other crafters makes me feel like I belong to the very best club.
CW: What projects have been most popular?
Tamara: The Artfully Simple Infinity Scarf came out last year and it’s been popular ever since. It’s a fantastic beginner’s pattern that hides any mistakes. Another popular project has to be the Eloise Baby Sweater. It’s elegant and fun at the same time.
CW: Where do you find your inspiration?
Tamara: Is it too cliché to say everywhere? Sometimes it’s a photo in a magazine, a sewing project I’ve seen online, or something that caught my eye at the store. And my kids and followers have amazing ideas too. Once I see a particular yarn, I’m off and running!
CW: Do you knit/crochet in public? Where’s the most unusual place you’ve knit or crocheted?
Tamara: Yes, everywhere! I’ve crocheted in coffee shops, museums, and even while working my last job (only during downtime, of course). I’ve even crocheted on a bus in Jamaica. Talk about a sign to make crocheting a career!
CW: How do you balance blogging with family life?
Tamara: I’m very lucky that I can set my own schedule, so I do my best to put things aside in the hours between the end of the school day and the kids’ bedtime. I can also squeeze in a few more hours of work before I go to bed. And when I need to close the laptop and sit down with some yarn, I can do it guilt free!
