Maggie Brereton, a self-taught seamstress, designs beautifully handmade items for children and mothers. Momma to three little ones, she loves to craft, cook and inspire others to have creative fun—from embroidering love notes to whipping up homemade slime. Here we chat with Maggie to learn more about her blog, Smashed Peas and Carrots (

CW: How did you become interested in crafts and what inspired you to start blogging?

Maggie: I was lucky to grow up with a mom who cooked and baked and a dad who was into woodworking and home improvement—I’ve been a DIYer all my life. Once I had my own children, I felt an urge to make special things for them to wear, and so, I taught myself to sew. I look at blogging as an online diary. It’s a way to share my life, what I make and what’s important in our family. Maybe reading about my passions will spark others to take a leap, too.

CW: How has your blog changed since you started? What surprises, challenges or rewards has it brought you?

Maggie: It began as a family blog, since my parents and siblings live far away and I wanted to share milestones with them. It didn’t cross my mind that anyone else would follow it in a million years. Now I have social media buttons on my home page—Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Flickr, my Etsy shop—and all sorts of ways to interact about crafts, kids and crazy fun.

CW: What kind of relationships do you have with your followers? What posts or subjects have proven most popular?

Maggie: My followers are a huge part of why I blog. I enjoy the interactions on a daily basis. The world never fails to amaze me with how many creative and inspiring people there are out there.

My most popular blogs include an Elastic Band Empire Waist Dress that incorporates a recycled tank top. People also love my how-to on folding and displaying yards of fabric as Mini Bolts. They’ll make your crafting studio look so bright and cheerful!

CW: How do you balance blogging with your family?

Maggie: I’m a very type A person who loves lists and organization. But I’ve learned to expect the unexpected (like dirty diapers).  My husband and kids come first—above sewing, blogging or anything else—and if I don’t craft for a week straight…that’s life. I’ve learned to be happy with each day, no matter what happens or doesn’t happen.
