Casual all-season shawl is an easy enough pattern or a beginner to knit, in a lovely ladder design.
- Six 2.5-ounce balls sport-weight yarn (shown: Lion Brand Microspun #144 Lilac)
- Size 7 (4.5mm) knitting needles or size needed to obtain correct gauge
- 16 small safety pins
- Yarn or tapestry needle

Gauge: 20 sts and 28 rows = 4 inches in St st (k on RS, p on WS). Slight variation in gauge will change the finished size a bit.
Row 2: K 1, p 1, k 1, p across row to last
3 sts, k 1, p 1, k 1: 99 sts.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until about
10 yds. of yarn remain, attaching new skeins of yarn at the ends of the rows and ending with Row 1.
Next Row: K 1, p 1, k 1, p 1, p 1 and attach a small safety pin to last st worked, * p 5, p 1 and attach a small safety pin to last st worked; repeat from * across to last four sts, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 1: 99 sts. Each st with a safety pin will be dropped when binding off.
Binding Off: Working in established pattern, bind off first 4 sts, draw yarn end through single st on working needle, drop marked st, * leaving about 1/2 in. of yarn over the dropped st, bind off next 5 sts and draw yarn end through single st on working needle, drop marked st; repeat from * across to last marked st, drop marked st, leaving about 1/2 in. of yarn over the dropped st, bind off remaining sts in pattern. Fasten off.
Finishing: Use yarn or tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends. Remove each small safety pin and drop each marked st down the entire length of the shawl to create pattern.
