Pretty and practical, this Sweater Jacket Knit Pattern keeps you fashionably warm and snuggly on a cold day.
- 5(6,6,8) 4-ounce 80-yard skeins of 2-ply-bulky weight yarn (Bear Farm Yarns Bulky 100% wool yarn in Cranberry shown)
- Size 15 (10mm) 29-inch circular needle
- Size J (6mm) crochet hook
- Cable needle
- Two 3-yard lengths of smooth contrasting color scrap yarn
- Yarn or tapestry needle

Working in Stockinette stitch (k RS, p WS), 8.5 sts and 12 rows = 4 inches.
St st = Stockinette stitch

K all rows
Cast on 40(44,48,52) sts.
Rows 1-12: K every row: 40(44,48,52) sts.
Row 13 (RS): (First inc row), k 8(9,10,11), yo, k 1, yo, k 6, yo, k 1, yo, k 8(10,12,14), yo, k 1, yo, k 6, yo, k 1, yo, k 8(9,10,11). This is the foundation row establishing the 8 places in which you will yo to add stitches, expanding front the neck into two front sections, sleeves and a back for your sweater: 48(52,56,60) sts.
Row 14 (WS): (Begin working in St st with garter st border): K 4, p across row including all yo sts in previous row, k last 4 sts: 48(52,56,60) sts.
Row 15 and all remaining RS rows: K across, working a yo on both sides of all single k sts as established in Row 13. (Front, sides, back and sleeves will get wider on each inc row.)
Row 16 and all remaining WS rows: K 4, p across, k last 4 sts.
Repeat Rows 15 and 16 until you have completed 14 sets of incs, ending with at WS row: 152(156,160,164) sts.
Separating Sleeves and Body:
(RS): K 23(24,25,26) sts to start of sleeve section. Do not break original yarn; with scrap yarn, bind off next 34 sts for first sleeve. Pick up original yarn and resume knitting; k 38(40,42,44) across back of sweater. Stop and use second piece of scrap yarn to bind off 34 sts for second sleeve. Resume knitting with original yarn across remaining 23(24,25,26 sts).
Continue working 84(88,92,96) sts on needle in St st with 4-st garter st border.
Center Back Cable:
Work until sweater measures 12 in. from base of neck or desired length to middle of back.
Row 1 (RS): K 38(40,42,44), place 2 sts on cable needle and hold to back of work, k 2, k 2 from cable needle, place 2 sts on cable needle and hold in front of work, k 2, k 2 from cable needle, k 38(40,42,44): 84(88,92,96) sts.
Rows 2-4: Work as established in St st: 84(88,92,96) sts.
Row 5 (RS): K 38(40,42,44 across to center 8 sts and reverse twists; place
2 sts on cable needle and put at front of work k 2, k 2 from cable needle, place 2 sts on cable needle and hold in back of work, k 2, k 2 from cable needle, k 38(40,42,44): 84(88,92,96) sts.
Work in St st with 4-st garter st border until sweater measures about 22(24,26,28) in. from start or about 4 in. shorter than desired finished length, ending with a RS row.
Garter St Bottom Edging:
Rows 1-15: K each row. Bind off on last (WS) row.
Carefully undo scrap yarn bind-off for one sleeve, placing 34 sts back on needle. Starting with a RS row, k seven rows. Bind off on next (WS) row. Repeat for other sleeve.
With RS facing and matching yarn, sew underarm seams together.
With a size J(6mm) crochet hook and matching yarn, chain 40 sts. Thread the chain through the center back cable and tie in back. Weave in all loose ends.
Pick up the 34 sleeve sts, continue to work in St st, decreasing 1 st at each end of every fourth row until 24 sts remain. Work until sleeve is 2 in. shorter than desired finished length, ending with a WS row. Starting with a RS row, k seven rows. Bind off on next (WS) row. Sew underarm seams together.
Follow instructions, omitting the center back cable. When sweater is about 13(14,15,16) in. long or desired length from base of neck, k the first and last 4 sts of every row and work k 2, p 2 ribbing on sts in between, continue in established pattern for 2 to 6 in. Finish sleeves using short or long version.
Add a Zipper:
Hand- or machine-sew a matching or contrasting zipper to the front. Use fabric glue to hold the zipper tape in place before sewing.
With a size J (6mm) crochet hook and matching yarn, chain desired number of sts for belt. Thread the belt through the center back cable.
FINISHED SIZE: Chest = 39-1/2 (41,43,45) inches.
Length = 26(27,29,31) inches.
Upper sleeve circumference = 17 inches.
